You will be exploring mediums and techniques to create atmosphere and mood in a landscape. The day will begin with a short introduction to acrylic paints, mediums and tools. For the remainder of the day, you will be exploring techniques such as wet on wet, applying impasto and opaque colour and transparent layers of paint to develop depth and mood in your painting.

You will be using acrylic paints and mediums as well as drawing tools.

This will be a relaxing and enjoyable workshop to focus on your art with individual advice and support. It is suitable is suitable for most artists – from beginners to improvers.

Material Requirements

  • Surface to paint on - canvas, board or heavy watercolour paper- no smaller than A4. Please stretch paper on a firm board before the day of the workshop. Block acrylic paper is acceptable and can be attached to a drawing board with masking tape
  • Standing easel or desktop easel
  • Palette - there will also be disposable palettes available for mixing paint
  • Brushes - please bring various sizes- preferably long handled and for use with acrylics.
  • Palette Knife - various shapes. Alternatively bring an old credit card or flexible filler scraper
  • Acrylic colours – Ensure that you have some basic colours such as:
    Titanium White, Black, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Cadmium Red, Magenta,
    Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Viridian, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Payne’s Grey
    Student quality paints are acceptable
  • Containers - 2 small jars or plastic cups for your water
  • Putty rubber
  • Soft pencils- 2B to 6B.
  • Old clothes to wear or bring an apron
  • Latex Gloves - optional
  • Please bring reference images of landscapes that you wish to paint from-preferably printed onto A4 or on a digital tablet/iPad

Material Cost

£6 which will cover:-

  • A variety of acrylic mediums available to use
  • Charcoal
  • Masking tape
  • Sugar paper and sketching paper will be available
