Modern Calligraphy has its basis in copperplate script. Copperplate is written with a pointed nib and requires varying pressure to create thick down strokes and thin upstrokes/hairlines. Modern calligraphy uses these principles to create a new, more relaxed, style which is much closer to handwriting and can be developed to create an individual style. It lends itself to a number of uses such as envelope writing, gift tags, cards, invitations etc.

You will first familiarise yourselves with the use of the pointed nib, ink and the art of pressure and release. You will then move on to practising letter shapes, words and short sentences. If time allows, we will then look at some simple flourishes to help embellish your script.
