Course Description

Immerse yourself in this exploration of willow basketry where we will use a variety of willows to make round or oval baskets. Working on your own project, and at your own pace, having three days removes the time pressure that can be felt in a one day course.

Beginners will be taken steadily through all the steps needed to turn a pile of willow rods into a functional basket including creating a slath and paired base, staking up, waling and randing the sides of the basket and finishing with a border. Beginners should expect to make a good size round basket with a traditional or contemporary handle, and may have time for a second smaller basket or small woven willow decorative item.

Improvers will be gently pushed to improve their technical skills and can make a round basket and try different weaves such as English and French rand, and waling variations, or explore shaping such as making an urn shaped basket. Improvers who are confident in the steps required to make a round basket can make an oval basket using a combination of pairing and randing. Some people will be able to make two baskets over the 3 days.

Catherine will bring a range of baskets showcasing different weaves, shaping, borders and handles for inspiration. She will also have smaller items to give you ideas for small projects to make towards the end of the course.

The course is suitable for beginners or improvers alike, however you do need reasonable dexterity and strength in both hands in order to be able to manipulate the willow over the 3 days of the course.
