Concertina sketchbook development using drawing media, inks, and simple collage techniques, responding to observations of landscape. Explore the creative potential of drawn line with restrained colour and texture, through experimentation with drawn marks using different tools and mediums.
Working initially in monochrome with the potential to explore colour observations in a less is more approach to drawing. Explore drawn marks; enlarge, simplify, abstract and fragment to create a personal record of landscape inspiration to use in the development of later work and to appreciate as working ideas.
Requirements List
- Concertina sketchbook A5 size
- Landscape inspiration as a starting point, in the form of sketchbook studies if you have them, photographs printed, if possible, artist books and postcards
- Drawing materials of choice; include drawing pens of various thicknesses and if you wish your preferred colour medium, e.g. Watercolours or watercolour pencils, coloured pencils, pastel conte type pencils, Derwent inktense blocks or pencils, Caran Dache neocolour, drawing inks. These are suggestions, use art materials that you have and wish to explore, there is no need to purchase specific items
- HB, 2B and 4B drawing pencils and others you may wish to use; a solid graphite stick is good to work with if you have one or soft pencils 6B-8B. Knife or pencil sharpener
- A Graduate Daler Rowney number 10 or 12 round brush to use with colour wash and ink, or similar which holds a good amount of colour
- Scissors for paper and/or craft knife and cutting surface
- Apron/overal
- A hairdryer is useful.

Amanda will bring a selection of her sketchbooks and drawing resources to inspire and use as starting points for exploration.
There will be a charge of £4 to cover the cost of materials listed below. This is payable directly to the tutor.
- Drawing inks and Koh I Noor water-based dye palettes
- Biro pens
- chisel pencils
- Wet strength papers (tea bag and lens tissue)
- Box of drawing tools for ink
- Bag of papers
- PVA glue/ spreaders and pots
- Water pots
- Gesso for drawing surface
