Course Description

Inspired by artists including David Hockney, Vincent Van Gogh, and Gustav Klimt, you will use the technique of batik (hot wax resist) to create pieces of work inspired by the paintings of trees by these three famous artists. Working on different surfaces such as tissue and found papers and fabric.   You will work with wax, bleach and inks to create fabulous textures and effects, exploring markmaking with traditional and non traditional tools inspired by the marks these artists use. The layering of wax, inks, and bleach on tissue, papers, and fabric will each give different effects. We will also look at their use of colour and use it for inspiration An exciting course allowing for exploration and discovery. The work will be suitable for further development in many different ways such as adding stitch.

This course is suitable for beginners or improvers alike.

Requirements List

  • An apron
  • Hairdryer
  • Pritt type glue stick, gloves
  • Scissors
  • Backing paper such as Khadi paper
  • Watercolour paper etc.
  • Two pieces of white or light cotton fabric, this can be pre used or vintage, max A3 in size
  • Newspaper if you have any for removing the wax
  • Images of trees for inspiration, including those from the three artists (Jenny will have plenty of examples too
  • Backing paper such as Khadi paper, watercolour paper etc.

Materials Cost

There will be a charge of £6 to cover the cost of inks, wax, tissue paper, cartridge paper, and all equipment. This is payable directly to the tutor.
