Course Description

Landscape will be our inspiration to create a panoramic folded book form or scroll using monoprinting and batik.

We will begin by explore monoprinting to create shapes and marks in the landscape. We will then use traditional and nontraditional tools to add a hot wax resist and add colour with acrylic drawing inks.

We will begin with monoprinting: to create a monoprint, acrylic paint is combined with an extender and rolled thinly onto a sheet of rigid plastic. Fabric or paper is lightly placed on top of the paint, and by 'drawing' onto this material, the pressure of the pencil will transfer the paint onto the surface of the fabric or paper. We will experiment with different tools to make monoprints on tissue paper and fabric, before creating a more considered image on fabric. These pieces can be developed later.

On the second day, you will add hot wax as a resist then use drawing inks to add colour to the prints.

The books may consist of individual pages or a panoramic composition. Your landscape may be inspired by a favourite place or journey so feel free to bring images to spark your imagination.

We will concentrate on creating our monoprinted batik landscape books or scrolls. If you wish to back them with plain fabric, this can be done at home, making the pieces substantial enough to add hand or machine stitch.
