Course Description

This two-day course will introduce the basics of accurate plant portraiture. Using seasonal flowers and fruit, we will explore the stages of botanical art using graphite pencil, pen and wash and watercolour techniques. The course is suitable for beginners, but those with previous watercolour or botanical art experience are also welcome, either to refresh an understanding of this style of work, or to work on personal projects with input and advice from the tutor.

Teaching will be delivered through presentations, group discussions, demonstrations and lots of one-to-one support.

Suitable For

This course is suitable for beginners or improvers alike.

Requirements List

  • A4 Cartridge Paper
  • Pencils 2H, HB, and 2B
  • An eraser and sharpener
  • Tracing paper
  • Kitchen towel or cloth
  • Watercolour paper:
This is a personal choice, though botanical artists tend to favour smooth or Hot Pressed paper. I particularly like Arches HP 140lb
  • Watercolours:
A few artist-quality colours are better than a set of cheap paints. If you already have good quality paints, there is no need to buy colours specially.
For three primary colours, I would choose Winsor and Newton: Permanent Rose, Winsor Blue (green shade) and Transparent Yellow. Other useful colours are French Ultramarine, Winsor Violet and a Sap Green (I personally favour Daler Rowney Sap Green). I will have small amounts of colour for you to try.
  • Brushes:
Size 1 for detail & 4 or 6 for washes. A good quality brush with a fine point might work for both, e.g. Billy Showell Fine tipped synthetic size 4
  • A water pot
  • A small plant, flower and a piece of fruit with interesting markings e.g. pansies and apple
