Sarah Martinez
Sarah has a degree in 3D Design from Kingston University and a Secondary Art PGCE from Oxford Brookes Her love of printmaking started at school when she studied Textile Design and became obssessed with t-shirt printing band t-shirts for friends. However ink is in her blood as her Aunt Brenda studied Textile Printing at Loughborough College of Art and the RCA.
Sarah is part of Open Studios West Berkshire and shows her prints as part of a group show at City Arts. Additionally, she is an associated member of Jelly Reading, arts organisation, and one half of Berkshire Printmakers which she set up with her artist husband Cipriano Martinez, as a reaction against the digital art movement and as away of preserving the "hands on technique" of silkscreen printmaking which was formally recognised as a Heritage Craft in 2023. She regularly takes part in artisan markets selling her hand dyed and printed scarves.
Sarah's own prints on paper take inspiration from children's books of the 70s, with flat bright colours and simple patterns. For Open Studio's West Berkshire 2024, she developed a series of prints based on illuminated fonts, ghost signs and fairground fonts. She enjoys all things print and she has recenly been experimenting with printing on clay.
