Course Description

Silk is said to be the most beautiful natural fibre and comes from the cocoons of the silk moth. These moths were first cultivated by the Chinese who then harvested the cocoons and spun the silk threads into cloth. Over time, it became such a valuable trading commodity that wars were fought over it.

You will begin by learning a little of the history and production of silk and about the qualities, textures and finishes of different silk fabrics from heavy brocades to the finest organza. You will use a variety of materials such as silk carrier rods, cocoon strippings, silk hankies and silk tops to make sheets of paper, bowls and you will cover glasses with pressed flowers and silk hankies to make tea light holders.

This course is suitable for beginners or improvers alike.

Requirements List

• Apron
• Scissors
• A Selection of paint brushes from 1-3cm wide
• A jam jar to use for glue
• A hand towel and an empty cardboard box to take home your work in

Materials Cost:

There will be a charge of £8 to cover the cost of silk fibres. This is payable directly to the tutor.
