Oxford Summer School

Janet Phillips

After a degree in Fine Art Sculpture Janet spent an exciting time teaching fine art and textiles in UK and in Hong Kong where she lived for 20years. From teaching in secondary schools, university, art college and to adult education gave her a wonderful creative life.

In Hong Kong she exhibited her drawings that captured the old and new buildings , ancestral halls and commercial buildings. A large selection of these drawings were purchased by the Hong Kong Government. This started her commercial art business creating her own range of stationary using her drawings. Janet then developed supplying to shops, department stores and manufacturers a range of floral products. From designing the art work, catalogues , products, store displays gave her an amazing creative challenge to supply to over 150 outlets and wholesale orders up to 250,000 pieces.

Janet returned to Uk to retreat from the rat race and developed a 500 year old derelict farm into her vision of a sustainable, environmentally friendly, educational farm. From here she ran her creative textile workshops and a selection of visiting tutors offered other courses. She particularly enjoyed using her own wools and retailing spinning and weaving equipment under her business name The Threshing Barn.

After 20 years she retired from the farm and relocated to the Yorkshire Dales. Her home in beautiful Wensleydale has inspired her most recent work inspired by the dry stone walls surrounding her home and the gnarled trees in her local woods. Her new business name is Janet and Bluebell, Bluebell being her camper van in which she now continues her creative journey.
