Course Description

Indigo is an exciting natural dye process that involves the development of the colour through an oxidisation process that sees the colour on the cloth change from green to blue.

This introduction to the ancient art of dyeing with indigo is suitable for beginners and those who want to experiment further with indigo. During the day, you will learn how to set up a small indigo vat. You will use three Japanese shibori techniques that involve clamping, tying and simple stitching cloth to create a resist, which results in a variety of interesting patterns.

Requirements List

  • Fabrics made from natural fibres, such as wool, cotton and silk
  • Threads, string, pegs, clamps and clips, buttons, large beads, screws
  • You will need an apron and something to take your work home in

Materials Cost

There will be a charge of £10 to cover the cost of dye. This is payable directly to the tutor.
