Throughout history Goldwork has been a status symbol - most often seen on ecclesiastical vestments, military uniforms and the clothes of Kings, Queens and the aristocracy. It has been around for millennia. Found in ancient Egypt and the courts of China it began crossing cultures as traders moved along the Silk Route. It became important part of English embroidery, most notably in the Middle Ages when the Opus Anglicanum was developed for church vestments and was often stitched by nuns.
Goldwork uses metal threads to create surface decoration and if you have always wanted to try it, but have been slightly intimidated by the precision of the techniques, this is an opportunity to join Sarah for a fun day of stitching. This project is to create your very own Golden Bumble Bee, hand stitched throughout, in a five inch embroidery hoop.
During the day you will learn how to
- Prepare your fabric in an embroidery hoop
- Transfer a design to the fabric
- Learn about padding
- Use different goldwork wires
- Learn about couching, chips and beading
- Complete the project within the hoop and add backing and ribbon for display
Suitable For
Sarah takes a very relaxed approach to Goldwork having been mainly self-taught and really wants to make it accessible even to the newest of stitchers. Please Note: This course is not for goldwork purists but is designed to give beginners or improvers alike a taster and perhaps a desire to study the technique further.
