John A. Blythe

John A. Blythe is an award winning, internationally exhibited photographic artist/teacher, specialising in sustainable alternative photographic processes. John has over 40 years’ experience with analogue photography, including over 20 years as a professional commercial photographer, alongside a postgraduate diploma in education and a master’s in fine art. John teaches in further and higher education, teaching is schools and has lectured at London College of Communication (UAL) and Reading University. As part of his research-based practice John has just completed a yearlong artist residency at University of Derby School of Art exploring experimental approaches to colour photographic practice. Other residency projects have included the ‘Sustainable Arts Lab’ (2021) with Fusion Arts and the ‘Sustainable Darkroom Residency’ (2020) with The London Alternative Photography Collective, focusing on building sustainable practices. John’s artwork has been exhibited widely, both in the UK and internationally and is held in private and institutional collections.

John’s personal practice imagines an alternative approach to photography that subverts the idea of photography’s mass reproducibility and dependence on the digital and mechanical, to explore unique visual possibilities that embraces the photograph as object, possessed of thingness, with a material quality all its own. Underlying John’s work is his need to be sustainable and to acknowledge his individual responsibility to his community and the wider world. John works as part of an interdisciplinary community of artists interested in finding more sustainable approaches to art making, with an emphasis on reducing environmental impact and developing ecologies of sustainable practice.
