Lorraine Berkshire-Roe
Lorraine Berkshire-Roe is an illustrator who uses pen and ink to produce original illustrations. Her subject matter is diverse, but she loves drawing animals, castles, natural history, including constellations and astronomy, buildings, local history and mythological subjects. She accepts commissions and has been working on a project which involves many connected illustrations of local business with other projects in the pipeline.
She takes part in a prompt drawing challenge called Inktober, where you make a drawing each day in October, from the one-word prompt provided. She chooses her own theme each year and has used this challenge to expand and hone her pen and ink drawing style, as well as developing her narrative style and content. She is currently working on producing some self-published visual story books and her dream is to become a published book illustrator.
Lorraine is a graduate in Graphic Design and Illustration. She has worked in self-employment as an illustrator and paper maché artist, for 9 years in a packaging design company and has returned to full-time self-employment as an illustrator and art educator in July 2024, after working as a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant in a primary school for 8 years when her daughter was young. She had taught many after-school art clubs and has been taking adult education lessons in pottery for 3 years.
After a few years of full-time motherhood and holding down a part time job, Lorraine realised that she was becoming out of practice at drawing, so she decided to reconnect with her love of keeping a sketchbook where she documents her interests and activities and exhibitions, memories etc. Her visual journalling helped Lorraine keep up her drawing and creative skills when she could not work as an illustrator when her daughter was very young.
Since becoming self-employed again, Lorraine has developed a series of Sketchbook Journal workshops and been teaching visual journalling at these workshops at a venue in Summertown since May 2025. They have been successful and she in continuing with those workshops next year, with plans to expand to different times and a hopefully a couple more venues. She also held two visual journaling workshops a Summer School in Headington in 2025.
