Suzette Smart

Suzette is a Textile Artist and Tutor living in a rural hamlet in North Shropshire. The natural world outside her door as well as the familiar journeys along the towpath close by, are her greatest source of inspiration for stitching and storytelling.

Her work is not lightly stitched and she never manages to tell all in the first layer but prefers to build a story through collage, thread and a little mixed media. Her work often includes hidden histories in the inherited or found fabrics and repurposed embroideries (her own and other) she chooses to use for collage and sometimes as a foundation layer. She mainly uses free machine embroidery but the finishing stitches are often hand stitches.

Her largest piece to date, Draw My World In Words, included many repurposed embroideries and was selected for the inaugural Fine Art Textile Award Gallery at The Festival Of Quilts and Knitting & Stitching Shows in 2019. (96cm x 172cm).

Suzette delivers talks and workshops throughout the UK , exhibits locally and further afield and is part of BVA Open Studios each June. She has an article and workshop in the latest edition of the WOWbook08 and a long time ago studied General Art & Design at NEWI, Wrexham, which then led to a BA(HONS) in Fashion and Textile Design at The University of Ulster, Belfast from 1990 to 1993.
